In the strong preservation community of Portland, Craftsman Design and Renovation is right at home. Owner Wade Freitag (front, far right), who has a design and architecture background, founded his company with a design/build direction and a focus on the city's historic neighborhoods.
Homeowners send photos of their project sites along with a wish list before Freitag even meets with them. This design process refinement has cut down on what Freitag calls his “running-around process” and has freed him up to create a design/build company in which he can be a principal and a designer.
One of Freitag's early goals was to “produce projects that looked like they came out of the pages ofAmerican Bungalowmagazine.” Now his company's work is featured in that publication as well as in two books on bungalow design. He is also on the board of the Architectural Heritage Center, which not only “helps in our goal of preserving the city we love,” he says, but “also educates a potential client base about the beauty and significance of Portland's older homes.”
