Gradison Building's combination of construction work offers a stable base for expansion. The building side consists of $1 million custom homes and a few spec houses in emerging developments. The company has a separate manager for its land development segment. Remodeling work accounted for more than $2 million in revenue last year, and the owners expect it to double by the end of this year. “Adding remodeling was critical and one of the most important strategic moves we have made,” Joe (left) says. Two project managers complete about 12 remodeling jobs a year, which range from $50,000 to $1 million whole-house projects.

The Gradisons recently remodeled the office/showroom to help with selections, and an interior decorator acts as a selections coordinator helping clients finalize selections early in the process. The company often spends more than three months on design. “Projects are so well-designed and thought-out early on, that after the contract is signed, we do not move up much on the price.”
