Ask Joe Fowkes (front) what the typical price tag is on one of his jobs, and he won't have a number for you. “We do a lot of different things,” he says. “We'll do a couple thousand bucks, and we'll do a million, too.”

That versatility is thanks to a legion of veteran carpenters, a crew 16 strong with an average age above 40. That's a rarity in the industry these days and something that sets him apart from others in the Richmond area, which has a strong professional remodeling community. “Being able to say that we don't sub much out and do most of the work in-house really helps me when I go to sell a job,” Fowkes says.

Back in the office, Joe's wife, Leigh, handles the company's financial affairs. Wateredge also has a production manager, who started out with the company as a carpenter seven years ago, and a general manager, Miles Hoge, who has been invaluable to the company since he started two years ago. “Our goal is to hire smart people and let them help build the business,” Joe Fowkes says.
