Everything about this company shows that it cares about its employees.

From the organizational chart, which puts owner Laverne Brubacher at the bottom—with the title “chief servant”—to the profit sharing, training, dental plan, life insurance, tool allowance, matching plan for retirement, and $100,000 in bonuses he handed out to 18 employees in 2004. “I believe fully in rewarding people for the work they do,” says Brubacher, who has been with the company for 40 years.

That respect and integrity made it possible to survive a particularly lean period in the mid-1990s when the company went into debt. Some subcontractors waited up to 90 days for payment yet continued working with the company.

With a core values system in place and Brubacher's hands-off support, the organization almost runs itself. People “can do problem solving in the field based on the parameters we've developed.” The company is always changing and growing with the idea, even after all this time, of going from “good to great.” Says Brubacher, “It's been a great journey.”
