Working at high volumes and with dozens on their staffs, insurance restoration companies can seem like the faceless corporate giant to full-service companies' mom-and-pop operations. Talk to Don Collie (left, with Jim Kincannon) though, and you quickly see where generalizations fail.

Though Metro Building and Restoration Specialists, the company his father started 25 years ago, employs 40, Collie cares as much about communication and employee development as any smaller company's owner — if not more. "I take that proactive, positive approach to teaching and motivation," Collie says, adding that his teaching philosophy is based on the notion that "there are no mistakes, just opportunities to learn." Collie backs up that commitment to his staff with health care benefits, profit sharing, and an incentive program that rewards field workers for customer satisfaction.
