David Crane (seated, right) is a real team player. He spends much of his time making sure everyone he's involved with through Crane Builders is happy. To show he cares about employees, he gives them anniversary gift certificates, takes them on an annual retreat, and has quarterly social family events. He hired a consultant to use personality tests to encourage better communications. For the past three years, Crane has paid for employees and spouses to attend a personal finance class. "It pays dividends for them and us," he says.
Crane takes local architects and interior designers to lunch to find out if they are compatible with his company or to thank them for their referrals. Clients receive restaurant gift certificates for referrals, and if Crane Builders gets the job, Crane sends them a knife set in a wood base with a plaque that reads, "Compliments of Crane Builders."
He also finds time for involvement with the local Remodelors Council and volunteers for a non-profit organization that builds houses for low-income families.
