Having the family spirit has always been a given, but it takes real business sense to run a company that completes 500 jobs a year. Jobs average $5,500, although some projects top $350,000. The Wallers stress that you either need to produce or support those who do. The four principals, besides handling management duties, are all project managers, so the family stamp is on each job. To further foster the sense of team, Waller Construction owns eight properties adjacent to its headquarters. It leases space to its trades to keep them close to home.

You don’t have to be a Waller to be treated as family, however. The company matches 401(k) contributions up to 5 percent of salary, offers 5 percent profit sharing, and ups salaries 5 percent annually.
