Greg Donahue wasn’t around when Sunvek developed a reputation as a large, high-quality company, but as the current owner, he is reaping the benefits. “Part of it is the image developed through TV and radio campaigns over the years,” he says. And though the company isn’t as extensive as some customers think, they find comfort in the 130 employees and the cabinet and countertop facility.
Greg purchased the company six years ago with his brother Mark. Over half the work the Scottsdale, Ariz.–based company handles includes whole-house remodels and kitchen and bath designs that average $25,000. The rest is specialty roofing and HVAC work. Greg says Sunvek’s success can be attributed to having in-house electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and roofing trades. “It helps us control timeliness, which controls profitability,” he says.
Greg handles the day-to-day operations. Mark is an investor and works on company finances from his home in Denver. Soon after the purchase, Greg started a “top shop,” which provides laminate countertops for Home Depot stores in the metro-Phoenix area. “Rather than fighting the competition, we’ve embraced them,” Greg explains.
Two years ago, Sunvek purchased a custom cabinet shop and is now looking to expand the design/build side. “We’re trying to gear our company for a solid foundation for growth,” Greg says.
