Don Novak (standing, third from left) likes a bit of activity in his life. Just look at all the initials after his name. But earning certifications to show his professionalism is just a piece of the pie.
The Cedar Rapids remodeler also has peppered his 42-year construction career with a considerable amount of industry activity.
He’s served as a national director of the NAHB, is working to develop a state Remodelors Council in Iowa, and has been president of his local builder’s association three times.
The basis for that volunteer status is a rock-solid company that did approximately $2.2 million in residential remodeling in 1999. All of that work came in an area with fewer than 200,000 people.
Novak has also started and sold a number of other companies, including a custom cabinet and millwork fabricator, a flooring company, and a commercial construction company.
To continue his growth, Novak is looking to two areas. By increasing project size, he can increase volume and retain his margin without undue overhead increases. He also is looking to expand operations toward Iowa City, which is a half hour away.
