Solutions
By installing affordable new tiles in a bold pattern, the Buckminster Green crew was able to bid farewell to the existing bathroom’s dated pink tile.
A neutral tile floor allows the blend of white, black, navy, and grey wall tile to stand out as a key element of the 1950s design.
The finish on the porcelain tub required sanding and buffing to fix damage and remove glue residue from a previous installation, but it was saved for use in the remodeled space. And after undergoing simple face-lifts, the existing sink and radiator were salvaged as well. New chrome accessories — sink and shower faucets, a magazine rack, and towel bars — along with a wood-frame oval mirror, enhance the vintage 1950s vibe.
Judges’ comments
The judges were impressed with how much the remodeling team accomplished in a small space and on a small budget. They felt that the simple design elements and the reuse of major fixtures was innovative and successful. One judge even commented that this remodel “was the best $14,000 I think anyone has spent all year.”
