A glass-enclosed bridge links the 1,000-square-foot addition to the 2,200-square-foot existing home, minimizing intrusion and allowing the clients to remain present during construction.

The two-story addition consists of a second-floor master bedroom, closet, and master bath, and a painting and graphic design studio on the first. An 18-foot-wide operable glass door accesses the pool and garden area.

View from existing space to the spa and adjacent pool. The master bedroom cantilevers five feet, providing protection from the sun. Operable windows, overhangs, and concrete floors are key elements of passive-solar design in Southern California.

Challenge: To add a bedroom, bath, and painting studio with minimal disruption to a 1950s modernist post-and-beam home. A glass-enclosed bridge connects the two-story 1,000-square-foot addition, circumventing code-mandated seismic upgrades to the existing home. Judging notes: “Brilliant — Rudolph Schindler incarnate.”
