Challenge: Renovate a 1922 Prairie-style house to include historically inspired forms and materials without simply imitating the past.

Solution: The home­owners almost exclusively use the back door, so, per their wishes, designer David Heide created a more significant rear entry with a covered porch. The porch entry is part of the 390-square-foot addition, which also houses a new kitchen, mudroom, and powder room. The family entertains frequently, so Heide also designed a screened “summer house” on the other side of the back entry that echoes the Prairie design on a smaller scale. Judges said: “[The design] kept the traditional language, but created a much more welcoming entrance into the house.” The judges also appreciated the craftsmanship that went into installing the stained woodwork used throughout the main floor.
